These are Velvet Shanks, an edible mushroom that grows on old rotten wood in the winter and can survive freezing conditions perfectly well. The flavour is very delicate, actually, not one of the tastiest but should be good for you by way of it's mineral content. There are similar that can be poisonous though, so do check online for ID. Please forage responsibly and sustainably, never take them all as some do, you can find out more in my book 'Homewood's Harvest' available to preview and/or buy online at www.blurb.com/bookstore and you can see it here on my BOOKS page. Enjoy your lockdown walk today and see if you can find some of these mushrooms, the forecast is for sunshine all day.
