Nuthatch building a nest entrance

I finally found where a pair of Nuthatches will nest today! These are fascinating birds and there nest is very unusual. They always choose a hole that is too big and then, as you can see here, they make it smaller to suit themselves and to keep out predators such as squirrels and magpies. The finished entrance is dried mud that is as tough as cement but as you can see here it has other ingredients. It looks as though fine and damp rootlets ( no idea what plant is used) are added first to make the framework. I'm sure the must is a particular kind too and possibly the birds saliva is an important ingredient?

Well, it was an interesting hour this morning, very very difficult to get a sho with sticks in the way but something I have wanted to see since I was a child so I'm very happy. Watch this space !
